The mysterious and elusive PHANTOM FAMILY HALO formed in 2006 as an outlet for the boundless creativity of songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Dahm Majuri Cipolla. The Family released multiple albums, EPs, and collaborations, and toured with Slint, Acid Mothers Temple, Lydia Lunch, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, before drifting into inactivity after Cipolla settled in New York City and joined Japanese legends MONO as their full-time drummer.
During MONO’s tours around the globe, Cipolla quietly wrote and amassed a large collection of new songs without any concrete plan to release them. While in Louisville, Kentucky, after more than a decade away, Cipolla connected with musician, engineer, and producer Ryan Patterson (Fotocrime, Coliseum) and entered Patterson’s studio, the House of Foto, to flesh out his demos.
After a few rounds of exciting recording sessions, Louisville phenom Ryan Davis (whose label Sophomore Lounge released much of the Family’s back catalog) happened to inquire about Phantom Family Halo returning to the stage at a show with Davis’ Roadhouse Band. There was now a need for a new live incarnation of the Family and a selection of great new songs ready to be brought to life.
Thus, the Phantom Family Halo was reborn. Cipolla recruited old friends, some of whom had been part of the Family ranks in the past, and the lineup was fleshed out with Dane Waters (Sapat, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), Evan Patterson (Young Widows, Jaye Jayle), Corey Smith (Jaye Jayle), Neal Argabright (Freakwater), and Ryan Patterson. The assembled band entered the House of Foto studio, expanding upon the material Cipolla had been recording, tracking new songs, and crafting a masterful group of songs containing elements of post-punk, krautrock, glam, and psychedelia.
The result is PFH, Phantom Family Halo’s first new album in nearly a decade, a brilliant and varied work containing immediately memorable songs performed by a group of some of the most revered musicians in Louisville’s rich underground music history.
