One of the most influential bands in Louisville’s fertile underground music history, Squirrel Bait inspired a generation of musicians, many of whom shaped the landscape of popular music in the 1990s. During their brief window of activity from 1983 to 1987, Squirrel Bait only released two 7” EPs, one self-titled 12” EP, and their swan song Skag Heaven LP before disbanding. Nevertheless, for those who are lucky enough to be in-the-know, they are as revered as their better-known peers Hüsker Dü, Lemonheads, Big Black, and The Replacements. After splitting up, Squirrel Bait’s members splintered into bands that would go on to, in some cases, have an even greater impact on music in the coming decades. Guitarist Brian McMahan and original drummer Britt Walford formed Slint, guitarist David Grubbs and bassist Clark Johnson formed Bastro, drummer Ben Daughtrey formed Love Jones, and singer Peter Searcy formed Big Wheel.
