From Evan / Future Heart: When I first heard rumblings of this band forming, I knew I would be a fan. Louisville Kentucky’s Giant Dunes is a five-piece (at times, more) group that lends their musical sensibilities to one another and creates a sound that’s unlike any other. I hate to say "Post-Prog-Lounge-Folk-Jazz-Rock as played by midlife punk kids" because that isn’t what it is, but it’s not far off. Think Sade covered by Television and run through the grinder of The Bad Seeds. It's as calm and gentle as it is funked-up, with a pace and groove that washes over the listener as if the songs might have just written themselves. Yet, at a surgical listen, the inner workings of these seamless arrangements belie a patient complexity that gives Giant Dunes an identity entirely their own. Nothing played or heard here is by accident. While the music has its improvisational, meditative, and absorbent feeling, these pieces are very premeditated. Make no mistake, Giant Dunes are experts at creating this music.
