Velocity Girl formed in 1989 in College Park, Maryland, although they were generally known as a Washington, DC band. Taking influence from the rough edges and sticky-sweet sounds of C86 jangle-pop and British shoegaze, Velocity Girl's music was more melodic and pop-influenced than many of their 90s peers. This approach led to Velocity Girl standing out as a shining star in a sea of grunge and post-hardcore bands that flooded the college radio airwaves, alt-rock MTV programming, and indie touring circuit of the time. They released three albums on Sub Pop, alongside a steady stream of singles, EPs, splits, and compilation appearances, before disbanding in 1996. Velocity Girl reunited for one show in 2002 and returned again in 2023.
